Blog Introduction
During today's lecture, Daniel Dutton discussed different tools available to us for constructing the individual and team blog.

Individual Blog - The individual blog is intended to provide context for your individual mark for the year. This blog is written in an informal style. It will be used as an ongoing record for the work, techniques, research conducted, etc. inside and outside of the Escape lectures (also providing evidence that I have an understanding of the work). Common content to be featured within these blogs will consist of a review of notes written in lectures.
Team Blog - The team blog is intended to provide context for your group marking for the year. This blog, contrasting to the individual blog, is written in a formal style. It will be used as an ongoing record of my work conducted within my designated group. This blog will link back to the team production plan. Additionally, it will serve as evidence of the work conducted to prevent emotional bias in peer marking.
Log Lines
Additionally, Daniel covered other pitches that were presented in the previous years, including his teams' pitch.
"A solo, alien detective ventures to a post-apocalyptic Earth to solve the mystery of the Great Filter". - Daniel's team log line.
Learning the concept of a log line, I applied the same principal to both my studio idea and my postcard game idea.
POSTCARD
"An elder man, burdened with cancer, delivers a long-lost postcard 75 years after its' writing".
PHOTOGRAMMETRY
"Using photogrammetry, produce more creative advertisements for tech demonstrations"
"Develop a studio that specializes in the production of 3D adverts and tech demonstrations"
"Develop a studio that builds upon the marketing trends of 'odd-vertising' and 'app-vertising"
SWOT. SMART. SCAMPER
John Saint Walker covered different brainstorming techniques. These techniques were all summarized with acronyms. SWOT is designed as a way to analyse an entities' strengths and weaknesses
Strengths - what are the strong aspects of the entity in the specific context?
Weaknesses - what are the weak aspects of the entity in the specific context?
Opportunities - what is available to the entity?
Threats - what can stop/heed progress for the entity?
TOWS Strategic Alternatives Matrix - is an alternative perspective to SWOT that elaborates on SWOT brainstorming
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
Opportunities | Strengths maximize opportunities | Minimize weaknesses with opportunities |
Threats | Strengths minimize threats | Ways to minimize weaknesses by avoiding threats |
SMART is designed to take an already established idea and set the goals for said idea.
Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Realistic
Time-Bound
SCAMPER is a brainstorming technique to take an already existing idea and adapt it to make something new. I applied this brainstorming technique to Nando's.

Substitute - serve fish based dishes instead of predominantly chicken. Potentially Portuguese fish dishes.
Combine - Restaurants could double as terrariums/aquariums.
Adapt - n/a
Modify/Magnify - n/a
Purpose - prioritise training young chefs (similar to medical universities)
Eliminate - the restaurant could serve only side dishes/snacks, removing main dishes from the menu.
Rearrange/Reverse - pay for the time at the restaurant rather than the meal itself ('All You Can Eat').
Another recommended way to brainstorm and to elaborate on ideas was to use 'Oblique Strategies' a text by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt.
Reflection Segment
"My perspective of the production log/blog construction. Yes, it is a requirement on the course. However, not only do I feel it gives greater to value to analyse and absorb the lecture content to a greater detail (not once, but twice), reflecting back on lessons and exploring tangents from those reflections gives me greater benefit than doing bare-minimum of the required work. For example, I am recognizing which methods and information has greater value to me such as the SCAMPER brainstorming method. Talking to Julia Shalet about my idea made me realize I was focusing too much way too early (restricting myself to a particular method and industry). So using SCAMPER allowed me to explore alternatives to my idea."
"These brainstorming methods covered by Saint have been so memorable on the course due to the fact that I am constantly referring back to them. SCAMPER, in particular, has been the most valuable brainstorming method on the course so far and I intend to use it at every part of the course. Obviously, not just SCAMPER. I will use other brainstorming ideas in case my idea doesn't work out or other reasons. SCAMPER will just be my lead method."
